Annual March for Babies by March of Dimes helps families facing maternal and infant health challenges

The March of Dimes held its largest fundraiser in Pittsburgh on Sunday, where three thousand people came together to walk along the North Shore in support of families experiencing maternal and infant health problems. For John Bricker of Harrisburg, the pain of losing his son Greg, who was born with a heart defect and passed away at the age of three and a half, still lingers more than 40 years later. His twin brother, Eric, also feels the weight of this loss and honors Greg’s memory through the March for Babies event.

This annual charitable walk by the March of Dimes raises funds for research, programs, and education to ensure that mothers and babies receive the best start possible. Families like the Brickers find solace in participating in this event and supporting others who are facing similar challenges. The organization aims to raise awareness about the high rate of preterm births in the United States, with Pennsylvania earning a C+ grade in this area. The U.S. is considered one of the most dangerous developed nations for childbirth, with one in 10 babies born prematurely and about 700 women dying each year from pregnancy-related complications.

John Bricker has been participating in the March of Dimes walk for 50 years, showing his commitment to helping families in need. His dedication to this cause has inspired many, including his son Eric, who admires his father’s commitment to complete strangers. John views his involvement in the event as a way to prevent others from experiencing the same pain he and his wife endured. His fundraising efforts over the years have brought him close to reaching $1 million, a remarkable achievement for a cause that is deeply personal to him.

In recognition of his efforts, the organization presented John with the first annual ‘John Bricker Legacy Award’ at the North Shore event. This honor serves as a reminder of Greg’s legacy and the importance of giving all children a fighting chance at a healthy life. John’s passion for this cause and his continued commitment to supporting families in need reflect the true spirit of the March of Dimes mission.
