The James Monroe Mavericks, the top-seeded team in the state quarterfinals, are set to face off against the Cameron Dragons (10-1), who recently defeated No. 9 Man in the first round of playoffs. The game will take place at 1:30 p.m. at H. E. Comer Jr. Sports Complex, hosting Mavericks’ home field.
In their win over Man, Cameron showcased their strong running attack with senior quarterback Colson Wichterman and junior running back Klypsan Wallace leading the way with a combined 230 team rushing yards and five rushing touchdowns. Both players surpassed the 1,000-yard mark in rushing this season, making it the first time for the school to have two such runners.
On defense, Cameron was equally impressive, allowing just 2.5 yards per carry against Man. However, their upcoming opponents, James Monroe, also had a strong showing in their previous playoff game with junior quarterback Layton Dowdy passing for five touchdowns and running for one more. This may pose a challenge for Cameron’s passing defense as they will need to be up to the task in this upcoming matchup.
