Anthropic, a rival AI startup led by Dario Amodei, has reportedly been approached by OpenAI’s board of directors to discuss the possibility of replacing their CEO, Sam Altman. However, Amodei declined both proposals, according to The Information on Monday. Meanwhile, Microsoft has taken on several key OpenAI personnel as employees, causing unrest within the startup. Nearly all of OpenAI’s 700 employees have threatened to quit, and one of its four-person board members has already resigned.

Anthropic was founded in 2020 by former executives at OpenAI who left due to disagreements over the safe development and governance of AI. The company has since secured investments from Google and Amazon and has seen its Claude AI models gain prominence alongside OpenAI’s GPT series.

Jeffrey Dastin in San Francisco and Urvi Dugar in Bengaluru have reported on this story for Reuters. Dastin is a correspondent based in San Francisco who focuses on technology and artificial intelligence. He previously wrote about airlines and travel from the New York bureau and holds a degree in history from Yale University. His work earned him a SOPA Award in 2022 for his examination of Amazon’s global lobbying efforts.
