Microsoft Taps Former OpenAI Director to Head Up New AI Research Initiative

Nov 20, 2023

Microsoft has announced that Sam Altman, co-founder and former CEO of OpenAI, will be joining the company as a leader of a new AI research team. This news comes after Altman’s recent departure from OpenAI, which was announced on Friday. According to Microsoft owner Satya Nadella, Altman and Greg Brockman, co-founders of OpenAI, will be instrumental in driving Microsoft’s continued investment in the field of artificial intelligence.

Altman responded to the announcement on the X social network by stating that he was excited for this new opportunity to continue his work in the field. He noted that OpenAI had developed ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence tool that had marked a significant development in the field of AI. Microsoft has already integrated OpenAI’s technology into its own products such as the Bing search engine.

The decision to dismiss Altman from OpenAI’s board of directors was made on Friday due to concerns about his consistent honesty in communication and ability to manage the company effectively. Several other leading figures at OpenAI also announced their departure following Altman’s departure.

In conclusion, Microsoft is continuing its investment in artificial intelligence with the addition of Sam Altman to its team. This move follows Altman’s recent departure from OpenAI and marks a significant step forward for both companies as they continue to drive innovation in this rapidly evolving field.
