Despite not winning a tournament this season, Thai golfer Atthaya Thitikul can still leave Naples, Florida with a trophy. She recently secured the LPGA’s scoring title with an average of 69.533 over 75 rounds, beating out Hyo Joo Kim by less than a stroke. This marks the first time in the award’s 70-year history that a player has won the scoring title without winning a tournament. Thitikul is also just the second Thai golfer to lift the Vare Trophy, following in the footsteps of Ariya Jutanugarn in 2018.
Thitikul’s fifth-place finish at the CME Group Tour Championship on Sunday was her 13th top-10 finish of the season, despite facing some challenges earlier in the season, including two missed cuts in major events and a withdrawal after an opening round 79 at the Women’s Scottish Open. “I had no idea I was going to win the Vare Trophy,” she said. “In fact, I played really badly in the middle of the season and struggled with my confidence.” However, she managed to overcome these challenges and bounce back strong at the end of the season.
