Wisconsin Cheese Expert Marieke Gouda Wins Top Prize at International Competition

Wisconsin has gained a reputation as a top cheese producer, winning a quarter of the awards at the 2023 World Cheese Awards. More than 4,000 cheeses from over 40 countries were judged by technical experts, buyers, retailers, and food writers. The Dairy Farmers of Wisconsin reported that the state’s long tradition of expert farming and cheesemaking has allowed it to produce rich and flavorful award-winning cheeses.

Suzanne Fanning, chief marking officer for Wisconsin Cheese and senior vice president for Dairy Farmers of Wisconsin, explained that the state’s ability to attract national and international artisans is due to its similarity to Northern Europe and its conducive climate for expert farming and cheesemaking. She expressed pride in the state’s award-winning cheeses and the tradition that continues to thrive.

Among the Wisconsin winners at the 2023 World Cheese Awards, Marieke Gouda from Thorp stood out with 12 awards – the highest number for any U.S. competitor. Marieke Penterman, owner of Marieke Gouda, was raised on a dairy farm in the Netherlands and learned to make gouda in both Wisconsin and Holland. Her expertise earned her accolades for her craft. Other cheese producers from Wisconsin were also recognized for their exceptional products.
