Spotify, the widely used music streaming service, is reportedly working on incorporating a new feature inspired by TikTok, which will allow users to remix songs. According to a recent report by the Wall Street Journal, this feature will enable users to manipulate songs from their favorite artists by speeding them up, mashing them up, and making other edits. These edited songs can then be saved for later listening. While these music editing capabilities may only be accessible through a new paid subscription tier called ‘Music Pro,’ discussions about the tools are still in early stages, and licensing agreements are being finalized.
Screenshots shared with TechCrunch reveal various mixing tools in the new feature, allowing users to showcase their DJ skills with different transition styles and creating the ultimate mix. Users can set the vibe of their mix by filtering songs based on genres, activities, moods, and other criteria. The app code also suggests that users will have access to tools that seamlessly blend tracks, maximize overlap for layered mixes, and instantly switch between tracks for a high impact experience.
Furthermore, users will have the ability to insert and edit transitions between tracks and adjust parameters like beats per minute and danceability. In addition to catering to experienced subscribers with mixing expertise, Spotify’s new features will include tools that automatically reorder mixes by grouping tracks with similar key, tempo, and style together. Users can choose how their mix is ordered or opt for Spotify to sequence it for them.
The trend of accelerated music has surged in popularity in recent years, with TikTok’s 2023 year-end report indicating that sped-up remixes were among the most popular songs on the platform. Although Spotify’s music editing features are still in development, it remains uncertain when or if the platform will make these tools available to all users.
